Computer Vocabulary Words

4th Grade

 

Mouse

An input device that lets you select and move items on your screen.

 

 

Keyboard

An input device that lets you enter information and instructions into a computer.  Most keyboards have 101 keys.

 

Monitor

An output device that displays text and graphics on the screen.

 

Printer

An output device that produces a paper copy of documents you create on the computer.

 

CPU Case

The box that contains all the major parts of the computer, including the CPU.

 

CD-ROM Drive

A device that reads information stored on Compact Discs (CDs).

 

DVD Drive

A device that reads information stored on DVD Discs.

 

Window

A rectangle that displays information on the screen.  Each window has a title bar that displays the name of the window.

 

Icon

A small picture that represents an item, such as a program.

 

Folder

Works like a file folder to keep files or documents of similar types together.

 

Toolbar

Rows of buttons, often at the top of the screen, that represent the most commonly used menu items.  These are shortcuts to the menu commands.

 

 

Menu

A list of commands or options from which you can choose.

 

RAM

Memory which stores information temporarily inside a computer.

 

Scanner

A device that reads images and text into a computer.

 

Ports

Connectors at the back and front of a computer where you plug in an external device.  This allows data to flow between the computer and the device.

 

USB Port

A high speed port that allows information to quickly transfer between a computer and an external device.  It can support up to 127 devices, such as printers, mice, and external modems.

 

USB Drive

A portable storage device used to store or transfer information.
